How to Prepare Your Resume

What is a resume?

A resume is not designed to get you the job, but to get you foot in the door. You are going to sell yourself in person once you get to the interview.

The resume is

  • A tool to market yourself
  • The prescreening process before an interview
  • Helps the employer or reader form a mental picture of you and your activities as they look for key words and phrases.
  • It is important to tailor your qualifications for the job applying to.
  • Allows an employer to quickly assess your qualifications before interview

This means a resume is not a chronology of everything you have ever done Resumes are about

  • How you can meet the needs of the employer?
  • How you can do the job?
  • How you can solve problems?
  • How you can save money?
  • How you can attract new customers?
  • How can you be of value to the employer?

Your job is

To make it easy for the employer to see that your skills and experience are well matched to the position, that you are a candidate worth interviewing

The primary thing an employer wants to know is

  • What can you do for me?
  • What the manager wants is a team player with a positive attitude, someone who is enthusiastic, concerned about customer services, dependable, punctual, able to work under pressure, and capable of adapting to different environments.
